Featuring caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and a golden melted Gruyère cheese top, this dish is perfect for family weeknights. The use of crusty bread cubes ensures every bite captures the essence of a bistro-style meal while remaining accessible for any home cook.
Ingredients
1.5 lbs ground beef (85/15 ratio)
4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 cups low-sodium beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded
3 cups fresh bread cubes (French baguette or sourdough)
1 tsp dried thyme
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
Heat olive oil in a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for 20 minutes until deeply golden brown.
Push onions to the side of the pan and add the ground beef to the center.
Cook the beef until browned, then drain excess fat.
Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
Simmer the mixture for 5 minutes to thicken the sauce slightly.
Transfer the beef and onion mixture into a casserole dish.
Top with bread cubes and cover evenly with shredded Gruyère cheese.
Bake for 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.
Notes
Ensure onions are sliced uniformly to allow for even caramelization. If you prefer a crunchier topping, bake for an additional 3-5 minutes or broil briefly at the end. Leftovers store well in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
