Description
Beef tamale pie combines savory ground beef with authentic Mexican spices and a golden cornmeal crust to create a satisfying, one-dish wonder. This family-friendly comfort food captures the essence of classic tamales without the laborious assembly, perfect for busy weeknights when you crave bold, warming flavors in a convenient format.
Ingredients
2 lbs 85/15 lean ground beef
1.5 cups yellow cornmeal
3 cups halal beef broth
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp salt
1 14 oz can diced tomatoes, drained
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 medium onion, diced
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Brown the ground beef in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until no pink remains.
Add the diced onions to the skillet and sauté until translucent.
Stir in the chili powder, cumin, salt, and drained diced tomatoes.
Simmer the mixture for five minutes to allow spices to infuse the meat.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, beef broth, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
Pour the cornmeal mixture evenly over the beef filling in the skillet (or transfer beef to a baking dish first).
Bake for 30 minutes until the crust is set and golden.
Remove from oven, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese, and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Ensure your beef broth is labeled halal. You can add chopped green chilies or jalapenos to the beef mixture if you prefer a spicier pie. The consistency of the cornmeal crust typically thickens as it cools.
