Description
The Tim Walz Hot Dish is a comforting, hearty casserole featuring ground beef, creamy soups, mixed vegetables, and crispy tater tots, perfect for family dinners and bringing people together.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon Olive Oil
1 Medium Yellow Onion, chopped
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 ½ pounds Lean Ground Beef
1 teaspoon Salt
½ teaspoon Black Pepper
1 teaspoon Dried Thyme
½ teaspoon Smoked Paprika
1 can (10.5 ounces) Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 can (10.5 ounces) Cream of Chicken Soup
½ cup Milk (whole or 2%)
1 bag (16 ounces) Frozen Mixed Vegetables (peas, carrots, green beans, corn)
1 bag (32 ounces) Frozen Tater Tots
1 ½ cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese, divided
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add onion, and cook until softened (about 5 minutes)
- Add garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant
- Add ground beef, break apart, and cook until browned, then drain excess fat
- Season beef with salt, pepper, thyme, and paprika, and stir to coat
- In a bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, and milk, whisk until smooth
- Pour the soup mixture into the skillet, add vegetables and ½ cup cheese, and stir to combine
- Transfer mixture to the baking dish, spreading it evenly
- Arrange tater tots in a single layer over the mixture
- Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly and the tater tots begin to turn golde
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly
- Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving
Notes
For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with plant-based meat or lentils.
