Description
This festive Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is a show-stopping yet simple dessert. Two sheets of puff pastry sandwich rich hazelnut-chocolate spread, then get cut, twisted, baked and dusted for a pull-apart treat perfect for the holidays.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets frozen puff pastry (thawed but still cold)
- ½ to ¾ cup hazelnut-chocolate spread (like Nutella)
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- Optional: powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment.
2. On a floured surface, roll out one sheet of pastry; spread the hazelnut-chocolate spread evenly leaving a small border.
3. Top with the second sheet of pastry and press the edges gently to seal.
4. Use a knife to cut the shape of a Christmas tree: leave a central ‘trunk’ strip and cut branches on each side; twist each branch strip several times away from you.
5. Whisk the egg with a little water or milk, brush the tree surface, then bake for about 18–22 minutes until golden and puffed.
6. Remove from oven, dust with powdered sugar if desired, let rest briefly then serve warm, pulling off the branches to share.
Notes
Keep the pastry cold until you’re ready to work, so it puffs up nicely.
Eat the tree fresh for best texture; store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2–3 days.
For savory variation, swap the chocolate spread for pesto and grated cheese or other savory filling.
