Description

Jamaican Steamed Cabbage is a traditional Caribbean side dish featuring thinly sliced green cabbage gently steamed with a vibrant mix of onions, bell peppers, garlic, and often a Scotch bonnet pepper for a kick. Fresh thyme and sometimes other spices like smoked paprika infuse it with rich, aromatic flavors, resulting in a tender yet slightly crisp vegetable dish, perfect for complementing hearty main courses.


Ingredients

1 medium green cabbage (about 2 pounds)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small yellow onion, chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Scotch bonnet pepper, deseeded and finely minced (optional)
2 sprigs fresh thyme
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup vegetable broth
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice


Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cabbage: Remove bruised leaves, cut in half, remove tough core, and thinly slice cabbage
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Heat olive oil, add onion and bell pepper, cook until soft
  3. Add Garlic and Pepper: Stir in garlic and Scotch bonnet, cook until fragrant
  4. Introduce Spices and Thyme: Add smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and thyme, cook briefly
  5. Add Cabbage and Broth: Stir in cabbage and broth, mix well
  6. Steam the Cabbage: Cover and steam on low heat for 10-15 minutes to desired tenderness
  7. Finish with Lime Juice: Remove from heat, add lime juice, adjust seasoning
  8. Serve Immediately: Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy warm

Notes

Adjust the heat level according to your preference by modifying the amount of Scotch bonnet pepper.
