Description

Homemade Marinara Sauce is a rich, vibrant, and utterly delicious tomato sauce that elevates countless dishes, from comforting pasta bowls to savory baked ziti and even as a base for pizza. This versatile sauce is made from high-quality, fresh ingredients and is freezer-friendly.

Ingredients

Scale

2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 medium Yellow Onion, finely diced
46 cloves Garlic, minced
2 (28-ounce) cans Whole Peeled San Marzano Tomatoes, crushed by hand
1 (15-ounce) can Tomato Sauce
1/2 cup Fresh Basil Leaves, roughly chopped
1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (optional)
1 teaspoon Salt, or to taste
1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Aromatics: Finely dice the onion and mince the garlic
  2. Sauté the Onion: Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat, add the onion, and cook until translucent
  3. Add the Garlic and Spices: Stir in garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1-2 minutes
  4. Introduce the Tomatoes: Crush the San Marzano tomatoes and add them along with tomato sauce
  5. Season the Sauce: Add sugar, salt, and black pepper, stirring thoroughly
  6. Simmer and Develop Flavor: Bring to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes to 2 hours, stirring occasionally
  7. Add Fresh Basil: Stir in chopped basil about 10 minutes before finished cooking
  8. Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Serve over pasta or use as a base for other dishes

Notes

For a smoother sauce, blend it after simmering.

Great for freezing and using later.
