Ingredients
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 medium Yellow Onion, finely diced
4–6 cloves Garlic, minced
2 (28-ounce) cans Whole Peeled San Marzano Tomatoes, crushed by hand
1 (15-ounce) can Tomato Sauce
1/2 cup Fresh Basil Leaves, roughly chopped
1 teaspoon Dried Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar (optional)
1 teaspoon Salt, or to taste
1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper, or to taste
Instructions
- Prepare Your Aromatics: Finely dice the onion and mince the garlic
- Sauté the Onion: Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat, add the onion, and cook until translucent
- Add the Garlic and Spices: Stir in garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1-2 minutes
- Introduce the Tomatoes: Crush the San Marzano tomatoes and add them along with tomato sauce
- Season the Sauce: Add sugar, salt, and black pepper, stirring thoroughly
- Simmer and Develop Flavor: Bring to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes to 2 hours, stirring occasionally
- Add Fresh Basil: Stir in chopped basil about 10 minutes before finished cooking
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve over pasta or use as a base for other dishes
