Description

Ingredients

2 large yellow onions
Vegetable oil for deep frying (4-6 cups)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1 1/4 cups milk
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for dry dredge)
1 teaspoon salt (for dry dredge)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (for dry dredge)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for dry dredge)
1/2 teaspoon onion powder (for dry dredge)
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (for dry dredge)
1 cup mayonnaise (for dipping sauce)
1/4 cup ketchup (for dipping sauce)
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish (for dipping sauce)
1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice (for dipping sauce)
1 teaspoon smoked paprika (for dipping sauce)
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (for dipping sauce)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for dipping sauce)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (for dipping sauce)
Pinch of salt (for dipping sauce)


Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions by peeling and slicing them into 1/2-inch thick rounds, then separate the rings
  2. Make the dipping sauce by whisking together mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, vinegar, smoked paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Refrigerate
  3. Prepare the batter by whisking flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk egg and milk, then combine with the dry ingredients
  4. For the dry dredge, mix together flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika in a shallow dish
  5. Set up your frying station with hot vegetable oil at 350-375°F
  6. Coat the onion pieces in dry dredge, then the wet batter, and return to dry dredge for coating agai
  7. Fry in small batches for 2-4 minutes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and season with salt
  8. Serve immediately with the dipping sauce
